Yale linguists present at 2015 LSA Annual Meeting

This week several current and former members of the Yale linguistics department will participate in the 89th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) in Portland, OR. Check out all of the presentations below, and extra congratulations to PhD candidate Jason Zentz for winning the 1st place Student Abstract Award!
Presentations
Friday, January 9:
- Lecturer Jim Wood, Iris Nowenstein (University of Iceland), and Einar Freyr Sigurðsson (University of Pennsylvania) are presenting a poster titled “Inverse attraction in Icelandic relative clauses”.
- Postdoc Kate Davidson and Elena Koulidobrova (Central Connecticut State University) are delivering a talk titled “Polarity at the syntax/discourse interface: Doubling and negation” as part of the session Syntax: Ellipsis and Doubling.
- Postdoc Kate Davidson and Deanna Gagne (UConn) are giving a talk titled “Evidence from ASL for domain arguments in quantified noun phrases” as part of the Semantics & Pragmatics I session.
- In the same session, postdoc Kate Davidson is also giving a talk titled “Quotation and classifier predicates: Iconicity through event modification”.

Professor Larry Horn, lecturer Jim Wood, professor Raffaella Zanuttini, undergraduates Grace Brody and Laura DiNardo and graduate student Luke Lindemann are delivering a talk titled “Here’s us a new methodology: The Southern Presentative Dative meets Mechanical Turk” as part of an American Dialect Society session.
- Recent alumna Amalia Skilton (BA ‘13), now a graduate student at UC Berkeley, is presenting a poster titled “The pragmatics of reversed-polarity questions in Máíhɨ̃ki (WesternTukanoan)”.

- Professor Larry Horn, lecturer Jim Wood, and professor Raffaella Zanuttini are presenting a poster titled “The Syntax of Speech Acts: Evidence from Southern American English Dialects”.
- Professor Bob Frank and former postdoc in our department Dennis Storoshenko (University of Calgary) are presenting a poster titled “Experiencing Scope: Inverted Expectations of QR in Raising”.
- Postdoc Hannah Haynie is presenting a poster titled “Contact, boundaries, and variation in Eastern Miwok”.
- PhD candidate Jason Zentz is delivering a talk titled “The composite derivation of Shona partial wh-movement” as part of the session Syntax: Operators and Locality.
- Recent alumna Emily Gasser (PhD ‘14; Swarthmore College) is giving a talk titled “/β, r, k/ in Wamesa: A Historical Route to a Crazy Rule” as part of the Phonological Change session.
- From the larger Yale linguistics community, postdoc Dave Kush (Haskins Laboratories) is presenting a poster titled “Experimental syntax and the cross-linguistic variation of island effects in Norwegian and Swedish” with Terje Lohndal (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) and Jon Sprouse (UConn).
Sunday, January 11:
- Professor (Adj) Doug Whalen (also CUNY Graduate Center/Haskins Laboratories), former lecturer in our department Christian DiCanio (Haskins Laboratories), and alumnus Hosung Nam (PhD ‘07; Haskins Laboratories) will give a talk titled “Labor-saving use of “forced alignment” for two endangered languages” as part of a symposium titled “Making the most of language archives: Automatic analysis of audio and video for enhanced linguistic analysis”.

- PhD candidate Jason Zentz will receive the 1st place Student Abstract Award for his abstract ”The composite derivation of Shona partial wh-movement”.
