Visiting Scholars
The Linguistics Department at Yale hosts visiting scholars from other institutions who are interested in participating in the intellectual life of the department and whose research interests fit with those of its faculty.
To be considered as a visiting scholar, candidates should contact a potential faculty sponsor (a professor with whom there is an overlap in research interest). For information about faculty research interests, see our list of faculty and research pages. Note that we receive many more requests than we can accommodate, so many candidates are necessarily turned away.
Policies and requirements
- Visiting Scholars generally hold a PhD or a Masters Degree and have significant research experience.
- Because resources are limited, the department can provide no financial support for visiting scholars and cannot guarantee office space. Scholars are expected to receive financial support from their home institution or a foundation or funding agency. Specifically, Yale requires that visiting scholars demonstrate financial support from their home institution or country during the entire visit. For the current requirements regarding the specified minimum amount, please consult the OISS webiste.
- Visiting scholars must also obtain health insurance prior to their arrival or once they arrive at Yale.
- Housing is not provided and visitors are advised to arrive early to get housing.
- Further, foreign scholars are responsible for ensuring that they satisfy any visa requirements for entry into the United States
