Labs & Reading Groups

Labs

The labs in our department are powerhouses of research. These are prestigious groups to join, and require a commitment of your time and effort. In a lab you receive close mentorship from the lab director, and you may work on projects individually or in groups. If you’d like to work with one of the lab directors below, you can email them to see if they are taking on new students at this time.

Reading groups

Our reading groups typically meet once every week or once every other week. Reading groups are fairly casual and they are a great way to learn more about a subfield you are interested in. The schedule and activities for the semester are usually determined as a group at the beginning of a semester, and attendance isn’t mandatory. For undergraduates, this is a great way to get connected with some of the research happening in our department.

There are a variety of activities in each reading group including: reading recent articles together, workshopping presentations and papers from other reading group members, inviting guest speakers, working on group projects, and more. Click on the pages below to learn more about each group!

  • Fieldwork/Documentation Working Group

Our aim is to support fieldwork and documentation at Yale, regardless of whether this happens in the lab or in the field.

  • Historical/Language Contact Group

Our aim is to explore the literature on language contact and change regardless of geographical or subfield focus.

  • Language Dynamics

A forum for reading and discussing papers pertaining to the dynamics of language and dynamic field theory (DFT).

  • Phonology Reading Group

We workshop in-progress research projects of group members, give practice talks, survey recent publications, and read articles together in depth.

  • Semantics Reading Group

Our aim is to engage ourselves in the recent literature in semantics and support researchers working within the field.

  • Syntax Reading Group (SynRG)

We discuss work in progress from reading group members, or we discuss recent articles from the syntactic literature.
