Raffaella Zanuttini was an invited speaker at this year’s Workshop in Altaic Formal Linguistics (WAFL 14), held at MIT October 19–21. She presented a paper, Why imperatives cannot (always) be embedded”, with Miok Pak and Paul Portner. This work proposes a new take on why imperatives resist embedding and highlights close connections to recent work on discourse particles, allocutive agreement, and conjunct/disjunct agreement. (This year’s edition of WAFL celebrated the career of Prof. Shigeru Miyagawa, co-founder of the conference, with Jaklin Kornflit).
