New Article on Honorific Meaning

Raffaella Zanuttini and her co-authors Miok Pak and Paul Portner recently published an article in the journal Glossa. In the article. “Dimensions of Honorific Meaning in Korean Speech Style Particles”, they analyze speech style particles in Korean, which express information about the relation between speaker and addressee. They argue that these particles express two dimensions of meaning: hierarchy (which expresses the respective position of speaker and addressee relative to a scale based on a certain social relation) and formality ( which is a way of classifying the social relation that forms the basis, or source, for the hierarchical relation).
