Ka-Fai Yip publishes paper in Studies in Chinese Linguistics

February 23, 2023

Ka-Fai Yip has published a paper entitled “Converbs and adverbial clauses: a case study in Cantonese” in Studies in Chinese Linguistics. The paper investigates converbs (verbal marking of adverbial subordination), an understudied topic of adverbial clauses, and argues that converbs in Cantonese are divided into the central class and the peripheral class. The paper shows that the two classes of converbal clauses differ systematically in both internal and external syntax in a way that resembles adverbial clauses headed by subordinators.
