April 20, 2022

Ka-Fai Yip has co-authored a paper entitled “Modal movement licensed by focus” with Tommy Tsz-Ming Lee (USC) in Andrew Simpson (ed.) New Explorations in Chinese Theoretical Syntax, which is a Festschrift volume dedicated to Yen-Hui Audrey Li. The paper investigates the interaction between root modal positions and focus interpretations in Chinese, and proposes a head movement account where the movement is constrained by a focus version of output economy.
