The Computational Linguistics of Narrative - Formalist and Structuralist Study of The Decameron: Prince Galeotto

Formalist and structuralist model of narrative have recently been rediscovered as information theoretically aligned approaches to examining both folkloristic and more generalizable text. As the structure and form of narrative text is inexorably linked to the language used to articulate it, we propose to reconcile structuralist models of narrative which incorporate linguistic concepts with a modern model of rhetorical structure. “The Decameron” offers a clear data source to validate this reconciled model, given both the prior work of Todorov, Petrovskij, as well as computational efforts of Correira. This talk will provide a window into our efforts to model narrative and examine the proposed reconciliation through semiotic closure (via network and complexity science).
