Claire Bowern recently delivered the keynote address at Ohio State University’s 13th Annual Martin Luther King Day Linguistics Symposium. This annual event is organized around a different theme each year, with this year’s being ”Mathematical/Computational Tools in and for Historical Linguistics.”
Several Yale linguistics faculty, students, and alumni presented at the 90th Annual Meeting of the Linguistics Society of America (LSA).
The Department of Linguistics is happy to announce that Claire Bowern and the Historical and Pama-Nyungan Lab will be hosting a second annual ‘grammar boot camp’ in July 2016. Over the course of four weeks, participants will work collaboratively to produce a sketch grammar of an Australian Aboriginal language, using an extensive database of field notes and recordings.
Members of the Yale Grammatical Diversity Project (YGDP) have published an article in the journal American Speech titled, “The Southern dative presentative meets Mechanical Turk.” The article explores a unqiue syntactic structure found in some dialects of English, and was co-authored by Yale linguistics lecturer Jim Wood, professor emeritus
“Hornucopia: A workshop honoring Laurence R. Horn” will take place November 6-7, 2015, at Sterling Memorial Library.
Earlier this month Professor Steve Anderson gave a public lecture titled “The Place of Human Language in the Animal World“ to inaugurate the new “Language and Communication” Research Network at the University of Geneva.
Associate Professor Claire Bowern will be giving a plenary at the workshop Capturing Phylogenetic Algorithms for Linguistics, which will be held October 26-30, 2015, at the Lorentz Center in Leiden, Netherlands.
Assistant Professor Ryan Bennett was an invited plenary speaker at the 2015 Annual Meeting on Phonology (AMP 2015), held October 9-11 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Also presenting from our department was lecturer Claire Moore-Cantwell.
The Yale linguistics department is conducting searches for two faculty positions during this academic year. One is a tenured Professor-level appointment in either semantics/pragmatics or phonetics/experimental phonology, the other an Assistant/Associate Professor position potentially in one of these areas but open to candidates in other fields as well. Claire Bowern and Yale Biomedical Engineering student Kevin Zhou have published a paper examining the evolution of numeral systems in the indigenous languages of Australia. “Quantifying uncertainty in the phylogenetics of Australian numeral systems” appears in the September 2015 issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
