Natalie Weber publishes in IJAL

Numbered example in a linguistics paper of Blackfoot root alternations

A paper by Natalie Weber titled “Beyond Minimal Pairs: Distributional Evidence For Two Additional Vowels In Blackfoot” has been published online in the International Journal of American Linguistics (IJAL). 

The paper argues that /ɛː/ and /ɔː/ are phonemic in Blackfoot, and reflects on how such phonemic categories can get “missed” in underdocumented languages. It includes methods for finding phonemic contrasts in polysynthetic languages with few minimal pairs.
