Ka-Fai Yip receives PLC-47 Best Abstract Award

March 28, 2023

Ka-Fai Yip received the Best Abstract Award at The 47th Annual Penn Linguistics Conference (PLC-47). The prize is awarded to the best three abstracts submitted by graduate students from outside the University of Pennsylvania. His abstract, entitled Agreeing with ‘only’ in Cantonese, focuses on an understudied case of form-meaning mismatch in Cantonese, where the adverbial and sentence-final exclusive particles ‘only’ may be doubled in a concord-like fashion. Drawing on evidence from locality and minimality that are less explored in quanitfier doubling, the study argues for a syntactic Agree dependency between the two particles. The study also discusses potential cross-linguistic extension of the Agree account to Mandarin Chinese and Vietnamese.
