On December 10, Claire Bowern led a discussion in the Yale Archaia program’s series on ancient worlds. Members of the linguistics department (Claire, along with Sarah Babinski and Chris Geissler) talked about the concepts of “Deep History” and how this broad view of history is based not simply on text but is centered around other ways of discovering the past. She discussed ways in which language elucidates the past, and ways in which metaphors on the one hand structure our approaches to historical investigation, and on the other make it difficult to make clear tests and predictions.
