Postdoc Kevin Tang gave invited talks at three venues in Hong Kong. The talks, entitled “Experience and expectation predict fine details of perception and production,” presented joint work with assistant professor Ryan Bennett and professors John Harris and Andrew Nevins of University College London investigating differences in the production of similar phonemes across languages. Based on data from production and perception studies on Cypriot Greek, Italian, Kaqchikel, and English, the researchers argue that these discrepancies arise from differences in the statistical distribution of words and segments in different languages. The presentations further discussed the effect of high-level factors influencing speech production on low-level phonetic details observed in speech.

The talks were given at the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the Education University of Hong Kong. The abstract is available at the presentation’s webpage.
