Jim Wood publishes chapter in The Verbal Domain

June 13, 2017

A chapter by Assistant Professor Jim Wood, co-authored with Professor Alec Marantz of New York University, has been published in a book entitled The Verbal Domain. The book contains a collection of essays detailing recent advances in the theory of verb phrases, exploring the syntactic, morphological, and semantic properties of these phrases across a variety of languages. Jim and Alec’s chapter, “The interpretation of external arguments,” investigates the behavior of a class Icelandic verbs known as figure reflexives, as well as a class of Japanese verbs known as adversity causatives. Based on these observations, the authors argue that certain functional words do not have any meaning a priori, but rather obtain semantic values based on their position within the verb phrase.

The Verbal Domain was published in March, and is available from Oxford University Press.
