Postdoc Jim Wood recently traveled to UPenn to present the paper Icelandic deverbal adjectives and case-alternations, on which Einar Freyr Sigurðsson is his co-author. They examine two ways of forming -able adjectives (such as unreadable) in Icelandic, which have different effects on case-marking, distinguishable semantics, and distinct morphosyntactic properties in common with both passives and generic middles. Their analysis is that -able adjectives are built from verbs in at least two steps, using some of the same primitives that are used to build passives and generic middles.
