Graduate students showcase their research at fall venues

January 18, 2017

Throughout the months of November and December, our graduate students were actively involved in research on a wide variety of topics, and in presenting the results of this research at several different venues.

On November 5, PhD candidate Rashad Ullah presented at Indiana University at the 3rd International Conference of the American Pragmatics Association (AMPRA). His talk, drawing from his dissertation research, was titled “On Bengali indefinites and the semantics/pragmatics interface.”

PhD students Martín Fuchs, Josh Phillips, and Andy Zhang participated in the Southern New England Workshop in Semantics (SNEWS), held at Brown University on November 12. Martín’s talk was titled “Contextual conditioning in semantic change: The Spanish Imperfective domain,” Josh presented “A sense of agency: Structure pronominal variation in Australian Kriol,” and Andy discussed ”A unified conceptual grounding of the locative and possessive meanings of English have: Evidence from contextual priming.”

Each year, we participate in SYNC, an annual one-day conference held by and for graduate students at Stony Brook, Yale, NYU, and the CUNY Graduate Center. This year, it was held on December 3 at the CUNY Graduate Center. PhD student Yiding Hao spoke about “A model-theoretic approach to minimalist syntax,” and PhD candidate Rikker Dockum delivered a talk titled “Tone analysis in Tai Khamti: Computational models in language documentation.”
