Emily Gasser presenting at ICLDC 3

February 25, 2013

PhD Student Emily Gasser will be presenting her work this week at the 3rd International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC), to be held at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa . Her paper discusses her experiences conducting fieldwork in West Papua under the auspices of a locally-run language center. With the community determining that their best interests were served by encouraging open access to outside researchers while requesting training in linguistic best practices, this paper makes an important contribution to the discussion of ethical practices in linguistic fieldwork, providing another possible model for the community/linguist relationship.
