Emily Gasser defends and deposits dissertation

On July 14, Emily Gasser successfully defended her dissertation Windesi Wamesa morphophonologywhich she deposited last Friday. Emily’s dissertation provides a description and formal analysis of the phonology and morphology of the Windesi dialect of Wamesa [wad], an endangered Austronesian language spoken in the south-eastern Bird’s Head of New Guinea, in the Indonesian province of West Papua. The data in the thesis is the result of almost seven months of fieldwork with speakers of the language. Emily’s committee members were Claire Bowern (advisor), Stephen Anderson, Ryan Bennett, and Mary Dalrymple (University of Oxford). She will be Visiting Assistant Professor of linguistics at Swarthmore College this fall!
