Claire Bowern releases CHIRILA database, publishes description in LD&C

Associate Professor Claire Bowern and her Pama-Nyungan Lab have completed the first phase release of CHIRILA (Contemporary and Historical Resources for the Indigenous Languages of Australia), a lexical and morphological database. The name CHIRILA is based on the word tyirilya, a widespread term for ‘echidna’ in languages of Australia’s Western Desert region.
The first phase consists of approximately 180,000 lexical items from 155 Australian languages. These data have been made available for download for non-commercial use at the Pama-Nyungan Lab website. Accompanying the first phase data release, Claire has also published a description of CHIRILA [PDF] in the latest volume of Language Documentation & Conservation.
